State transportation officials got an earful from Bronx residents and advocates who oppose a key detail in the State’s plan to revitalize the Sheridan Expressway, at a public hearing in Hunts Point on June 27. It was the last hearing for testimony to be given in response to the State’s proposal to build three ramps between the Sheridan and Edgewater Road, as part of a $1.7 billion investment to upgrade and beautify the expressway and surrounding area.
Community groups and residents are urging the state to reverse its decision to place exit ramps from the Sheridan Expressway on Oak Point and Leggett avenues, as part of an ambitious revitalization plan.
Local advocates say that the plan is essentially a highway expansion, and ignores many of the community’s ideas for reviving the area shared in dozens of meetings with city planners and elected officials over the past decade.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a press conference at Casita Maria on Sunday that the state will make a $1.8-billion investment to revitalize infrastructure in Hunts Point.
Advocates, who for over a decade have fought to replace the highway, with housing, businesses, parks and easy access to the Bronx River, are happy with some parts of a new city plan, but not with others.
