Advocates are excited about new access to the waterfront, but say they are frustrated with the State’s tone deafness to residents’ concerns about the upcoming highway improvement plan, referred to as the Hunts Point project, which calls for new ramps between the Sheridan and Edgewater Road.
Community groups and residents are urging the state to reverse its decision to place exit ramps from the Sheridan Expressway on Oak Point and Leggett avenues, as part of an ambitious revitalization plan.
After Toniann German was introduced to the Bronx River through Rocking the Boat as a troubled teen, she found that she couldn’t leave the river. Now she’s the new recreational coordinator for the Bronx River Alliance, running all of the canoeing and on-water education and conservation events and teaching people everything from how to paddle, to the history of the river, to the reasons to keep it clean.

The Bronx got a lot more crowded on April 20, as 400 alewife herring from Connecticut commuted down from the suburbs and were released into the Bronx River from its shores in the Bronx Zoo.

On Feb. 17 the Bronx River Alliance and the New York City Department of Parks will be awarded the Audrey Nelson Award, for their work reviving the Bronx River. The award is given annually to an exemplary community development program.
