Calling all seniors! Looking for a new way to get up and moving? The Bronx River Alliance has partnered with City Parks Foundation to host Senior Fitness, a citywide exercise program exclusively for those 60 and over. Events will be held in Soundview, Van Cortlandt and Pelham Bay parks.
“We have been doing this program for over 10 years in all five boroughs, including the Bronx from the very beginning,” said Kate Nemetz, marketing and public relations manager from City Parks Foundation.
Different exercise sessions will be offered in Bronx parks twice a week through June 16. The sessions are led by trained professionals, some new and some returning from past years. Types of sessions include yoga, tennis and fitness walking.
For those looking for a waterfront view while exercising, both yoga and fitness walking will be held at Soundview Park at Lafayette Avenue between Boynton and Colgate avenues, on Mondays and Wednesdays, both in the morning and afternoon. Yoga will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at Pelham Bay Park at Middletown Road and Stadium Avenue, while tennis is also offered at Pelham Bay on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.
In Van Cortlandt Park on Woodlawn Tennis Courts, fitness walking will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m., and yoga on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m.
“We are getting seniors out in their parks. There are many known benefits of being outside and they can exercise, feel good both physically and mentally and make friends from the community,” said Nemetz.
Although all sessions are free and open to anyone in the senior community, participants are suggested to register. The full schedule and registration link can be found at https://cityparksfoundation.org/seniors-fitness/.
